The beginning of fall is always a crazy-busy time of year! From back-to-school and soccer practice to harvest festivals and birthday parties, there's always something going on. That means there’s a need for great on-the-go snacks that the whole family will love. That’s where these homemade fruit leather recipes come in...
Both of these flavors of fruit leather are easy to make, and just require some time to set in the oven. Pears and apples lend themselves well to this recipe because of their high fiber content and mild sweetness. The addition of flavors like cinnamon and cardamom make them more flavorful than your average snacks. Now, which flavor will you make first?
- 4 cups apples (peeled, cored and chopped)
- 12 cup water
- 2 tablespoons sugar (or granulated cane sugar)
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- Pinch sea salt
- Add all ingredients to a saucepan, cover, and bring to a full boil. Continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until apples have softened, about 20 minutes.
- Remove lid and continue cooking at a gentle boil for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Remove from heat and allow mixture to cool. Transfer to a blender and blend until completely smooth.
- Preheat the oven to 170 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silpat baking mat.
- Pour the pureed apple mixture onto the prepared baking dish and smooth into an even layer. It’s okay for the mixture to be spread very thinly. Place on center rack of the oven and bake 2.5-3 hours until fruit leather has set and feels firm to the touch. Remove from oven and allow fruit leather to cool. Transfer entire baking sheet to the refrigerator and refrigerate until chilled.
- Transfer the fruit leather to a cutting board and use kitchen scissors to cut long strips.
If you used parchment paper, you can cut both the parchment and fruit leather and use parchment as a convenient way to roll the fruit leather.
